Just a hundred feet down a remaining section of a side street from the serene setting
of the park bench lay the first clue that there was more to Centralia. What looks like
it could be a backyard brush fire is something bigger, as we see smoke and steam drifting
up from behind the trees.
The fire has been burning underground since the 60s. It was very sobering to think about
all that coal smouldering for forty years! Photo by Matt. |
