Another eerie image of the smouldering landscape. The smoke blends in with the grey skies
in the background to make it quite a dreary image. The metal pipe on the left side of the
photo appears to be one of the many bore holes dug to monitor the spread of the fire.
After reading about Centralia. I wondered if this might have been the site
of the old landfill where the fire started. Further up the slag heap we found
bits of garbage strewn around, though those could always have been from
fresh dumping.
