Daylight Savings Time   November 9th, 2012

I had this quick idea for a scene. Daylight Savings Time always annoys me. Well the extra hour of sleep is nice, but sunset getting earlier as the days are short enough already, that’s the part I don’t like. So I imagined a conversation with someone who would appreciate it.

The End of October   November 9th, 2012

This started out as an idea I’d had since Halloween, which had bounced around in my head until I was finally able to put it together into a complete scene. It’s more of a mood piece than a story-driven plot, but I really like how it came out. It takes a couple of (non-mystical) memories I have from October nights and turned into a sweet love letter to Autumn and Halloween.

I am currently writing furiously to keep up with the word count for NaNoWriMo, so I didn’t have a chance to fully proof read this, so I’m sure there are typos in it.

National Novel Writing Month   November 9th, 2012

Work and Life have been very hectic for me and before that I was also busy with various publishing projects. In short, I haven’t written anything creative for four years! I can’t believe I’ve let it go that long, but I ran out of energy and inspiration and didn’t force myself to work through it. I’m trying to get back on the horse and seeing if I can get my muse to work with me again, after ignoring her for so long.

So to do that I’m taking part in National Novel Writing Month again, the first time since 2006. I’ve done it before and it’s always been a blast, even if I didn’t always finish the projects I started. It was very good for a creative kick start.

I’m cheating a bit this year as I’m not working on a novel project. Longer stories are tough for me, as I tend to lose steam and ideas. So instead I’m going to just see if I can write 50,000 words of creative and introspective writing. Some purists might be annoyed with that, but I figure if it gets me to write again, then it’s definitely worth it.

Mice Election   November 6th, 2012

In honor of election day in these United States tomorrow, here is an older piece of flash fiction I wrote during another election, that one a hard-fought mid-season race. It was a retelling of a joke I’d read on a usenet forum years before, which I then learned was inspired by the classic political fable Mouseland.

The illustration was done by the talented artist Synnabar. There is also an audio version of the story.

So make sure to get out and vote tomorrow, no matter which cat you’re casting the ballot for.

I was inspired of writing this bit of fiction like a grade-school science report while driving home from a Jonathan Coulton concert and listening to more of his music in the car. This wasn’t inspired by any song in particular, just the overall geeky milieu. I wanted to throw a reference to the ninja site, Real Ultimate Power in there too. Ultimately this isn’t as funny as I’d hoped it could be, but it’s kind of cute and was fun and a decent exercise for NaNoWriMo.
